It’s crucial for your wellbeing that your home is a haven from the outside world where you can leave the stresses of work and life behind. But is there more you could do to ensure that this is the environment your home offers?

Here, we’ll explore some simple home design tips to improve your wellbeing that are easy to implement and could make a difference to your mental health.

Furnishings

After a tough day in the office, one of the easiest ways to unwind and collect your thoughts is to have somewhere comfortable to relax. Make sure your chairs, sofa and bed are cosy and of good quality to deliver optimum rest. Enjoy the outdoors after a stressful day? Don’t forget the furniture out here too. There are some fantastic corner dining sets and hanging egg chairs that you can buy to give you somewhere peaceful and relaxing to take time out after a tough day.

Colour

It’s a well-known fact that colour can evoke different feelings, so this is also worth considering when it comes to designing your home to benefit your well-being. For example, red is believed to relate to aggression and passion.

Consequently, if you want a room that makes you feel calm and relaxed, you might want to avoid this shade. Instead, opt for blue or green walls and furnishings to help you create an environment that evokes feelings of peace, nature and balance to help you relax on an evening.

Minimalism

Adopting a minimalist approach when it comes to home design is believed to help us feel calmer and fend off anxiety. Minimalism or getting rid of clutter can help you focus and the act of decluttering can work as a way to let go of anything that doesn’t align with your current life. This in turn enables your physical space to reflect where you’re at mentally, giving you more clarity and preventing you from ‘hanging on’ to things that might cause you stress or resentment.

Plants

Having small plants and flowers in the home is a great way to improve your well-being. Humans are naturally in tune with nature and ‘biophilic design’ is known for its ability to improve our mood and wellbeing. In fact, many studies have found that plants help reduce stress and anxiety, as well as boost our cognitive skills.

With that in mind, try and scatter houseplants liberally throughout each room and make sure to go for lots of different colours to brighten up your interior. Window boxes are another great way to bring nature into your home and are easy to take care of, too.

Light

Natural light is fantastic for making a space feel less confined. Having plenty of light is thought to greatly improve your mood, since it boosts the amount of serotonin (the hormone that helps us feel calm) your body releases.

Try and design your rooms to attract as much natural light as you can by installing large windows, skylights or bifold doors. Avoiding heavy fabric curtains and manoeuvring your sofas and chairs to a well-lit place will also help illuminate your interior spaces and lift your mood.

These are just a handful of handy ways to redesign your home to improve your wellbeing. Good luck with your interior makeover!
